The experiences and perspectives of overseas trained speech and language therapists working in the United Kingdom
There is a growing body of research which has investigated the experience of the migrant health worker. However, only one of these studies has included speech and language therapists thus far, and then only with extremely small numbers. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences and perspectives of migrant speech and language therapists living in the UK. Twenty-three overseas qualified speech and language therapists living in the UK completed an online survey consisting of 36 questions (31 closed question, 5 open-ended questions). The majority of participants came from Australia or the USA and moved to the UK early in their careers. Participants reported a range of benefits from working in another country and more specifically working in the UK. The findings were consistent with other research on migrant health workers regarding known pull factors of travel, finance, and career. This study suggests additional advantages to working in the UK were realised once participants had started working in the UK, such as the UK job lifestyle. Finally, the migrant speech and language therapists were similar in profile to other migrant health workers in terms of age and country of origin previously reported in the literature
A precise measurement of the nonâleptonic weak decay parameters α and Ï in the spin 3/2 decay ÏââÎ0+Kâ
Experiment E800 at Fermilab using the E800 spectrometer has made a precise measurement of the nonâleptonic weak decay parameters for the spin 3/2 decay, Ωââΰ+Kâ. The paratmeters determined are αΎαΩ=0.0126±0.0042, αΩ=0.0196±0.0066, and ÏÏ=â3.4°±10.3°. This measurement of αΩ is nearly four times more precise than the previous world average value of â0.026±0.026 and shows this parameter to be inconsistent with zero. A precision measurement of the 멉 magnetic moment
The structure of baryons can be probed at long range by measuring their magnetic moments. The particulary simple valence quark structure (three strange quarks with their spins aligned) of the Ωâ should make a precise measurments its magnetic moment a useful test of models of baryon structure. A Study of Cosmic Ray Composition in the Knee Region using Multiple Muon Events in the Soudan 2 Detector
Deep underground muon events recorded by the Soudan 2 detector, located at a
depth of 2100 meters of water equivalent, have been used to infer the nuclear
composition of cosmic rays in the "knee" region of the cosmic ray energy
spectrum. The observed muon multiplicity distribution favors a composition
model with a substantial proton content in the energy region 800,000 -

The discourse of Olympic security 2012 : London 2012
This paper uses a combination of CDA and CL to investigate the discursive realization of the security operation for the 2012 London Olympic Games. Drawing on Didier Bigoâs (2008) conceptualisation of the âbanopticonâ, it address two questions: what distinctive
linguistic features are used in documents relating to security for London 2012; and, how is Olympic security realized as a discursive practice in these documents? Findings suggest that the documents indeed realized key banoptic features of the banopticon: exceptionalism, exclusion and prediction, as well as what we call âpedagogisationâ. Claims were made for the
exceptional scale of the Olympic events; predictive technologies were proposed to assess the
threat from terrorism; and documentary evidence suggests that access to Olympic venues
was being constituted to resemble transit through national boundarie
Characterisation of feline renal cortical fibroblast cultures and their transcriptional response to transforming growth factor beta 1
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common in geriatric cats, and the most prevalent pathology is chronic tubulointerstitial inflammation and fibrosis. The cell type predominantly responsible for the production of extra-cellular matrix in renal fibrosis is the myofibroblast, and fibroblast to myofibroblast differentiation is probably a crucial event. The cytokine TGF-ÎČ1 is reportedly the most important regulator of myofibroblastic differentiation in other species. The aim of this study was to isolate and characterise renal fibroblasts from cadaverous kidney tissue of cats with and without CKD, and to investigate the transcriptional response to TGF-ÎČ1
Polarization and spin transfer of Ωâ and Îâ hyperons at 800 GeV
Fermilab experiment E756 has measured the polarization of Wâ hyperons produced by 800 GeV protons to be small compared to that of Îâ hyperons. A Study of Muon Neutrino Disappearance Using the Fermilab Main Injector Neutrino Beam
We report the results of a search for muon-neutrino disappearance by the Main
Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search. The experiment uses two detectors
separated by 734 km to observe a beam of neutrinos created by the Neutrinos at
the Main Injector facility at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The data
were collected in the first 282 days of beam operations and correspond to an
exposure of 1.27e20 protons on target. Based on measurements in the Near
Detector, in the absence of neutrino oscillations we expected 336 +/- 14
muon-neutrino charged-current interactions at the Far Detector but observed
215. This deficit of events corresponds to a significance of 5.2 standard
deviations. The deficit is energy dependent and is consistent with two-flavor
neutrino oscillations according to delta m-squared = 2.74e-3 +0.44/-0.26e-3
eV^2 and sin^2(2 theta) > 0.87 at 68% confidence level.Comment: In submission to Phys. Rev.
Measurement of the Atmospheric Muon Charge Ratio at TeV Energies with MINOS
The 5.4 kton MINOS far detector has been taking charge-separated cosmic ray
muon data since the beginning of August, 2003 at a depth of 2070
meters-water-equivalent in the Soudan Underground Laboratory, Minnesota, USA.
The data with both forward and reversed magnetic field running configurations
were combined to minimize systematic errors in the determination of the
underground muon charge ratio. When averaged, two independent analyses find the
charge ratio underground to be 1.374 +/- 0.004 (stat.) +0.012 -0.010(sys.).
Using the map of the Soudan rock overburden, the muon momenta as measured
underground were projected to the corresponding values at the surface in the
energy range 1-7 TeV. Within this range of energies at the surface, the MINOS
data are consistent with the charge ratio being energy independent at the two
standard deviation level. When the MINOS results are compared with measurements
at lower energies, a clear rise in the charge ratio in the energy range 0.3 --
1.0 TeV is apparent. A qualitative model shows that the rise is consistent with
an increasing contribution of kaon decays to the muon charge ratio.Comment: 16 pages, 17 figure
